Islam Safarli pedestrian street

About the project

Islam Safarli Street is one of the most vibrant streets in central Baku, linking Fountain Square (Torgovaya), the pedestrianized section of Nizami Street, the Old City (Icherisheher), and Winter Park, a major public space created in the 2010s. Its pedestrianization was a key step in extending Baku’s walkable urban core and strengthening connections between some of the city’s most important public spaces.

What We Delivered

- developed the case for pedestrianization based on the area’s urban context, traffic and pedestrian flow analysis, and an understanding of how residents and visitors use the space;

- designed a mobility and traffic management plan for the surrounding streets and public spaces, accounting for the street’s closure to vehicular traffic, and identified measures to improve pedestrian accessibility and connectivity;

- proposed a vision for public realm improvements, including streetscape design and urban greening interventions.
